Under the direction of the Manager, Government Relations, this position partners with local government offices, elected officials, cities in Long Beach Transit’s service area, and other community stakeholders in helping Long Beach Transit meet its strategic goals and address state and federal policies. The Government Relations Department represents the interests of the Agency while assisting with the development and implementation of effective outreach strategies while bringing the agency’s work to the attention of federal, state, regional and local elected and administrative officials, and their offices. This position is also responsible for tracking legislation, regulations and fostering funding opportunities for the company.  

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include:

 

  • Assists in building and maintaining excellent working relationships with local, regional, state and federal elected officials and responds to requests for information or assistance
  • Coordinates with the Capital Planning and Grants Program team in identifying new funding sources for the agency, and works to protect existing funding sources through legislative efforts
  • Tracks and analyzes legislation, regulations, policy proposals, hearings, announcements, and other government actions relevant to the agency’s positions
  • Works with state and federal advocacy consultants in support of legislative and funding concerns as needed
  • Works jointly with Government Relations Manager to coordinate the preparation and development of the Agency’s planning documents including the Short-Range Transit Plan and Long Range Transit Plan as well as other required planning documents
  • Identifies and maintains contact with key community, business and government organizations representing Long Beach Transit’s mission, vision, and strategic goals
  • Collaborates with Government Relations Manager, Community Relations and Marketing teams to develop and manage messaging to help ensure that communication and outreach are components of agency’s institutional goals. This includes collaborating on talking points, briefing documents, memos, and communications to relevant policymakers
  • Acts as a liaison in addressing agency compliance issues with state or federal agencies
  • Serves as Long Beach Transit’s spokesperson and actively participates at meetings or alternate representative for local and regional association meetings including Los Angeles Metro, Bus Operators Subcommittee, Los Angeles County Municipal Operators Association, and other meetings as requested
  • Maintains positive relations with Long Beach Transit employees, elected officials, Long Beach Transit partners, and other. Provides recommendations to improve Long Beach Transit’s relationships, outreach efforts and overall communication strategy with organizations within the areas of service
  • Complies with all safety regulations as stated in the agency safety program, and reports safety-related accidents, incidents, and unsafe work conditions.
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Some travel may be required, as well as a willingness to work evenings and weekends as needed
  • Ability to work as part of a team and across multiple departments
  • Possession of a current valid C driver’s license and good driving record is essential

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:          

  • A Bachelor of Arts/Science in Political Science, Public Administration, Communications, or related field is required
  • Three years of experience in local, state and/or federal programs, grant writing, reviewing and analyzing legislation for the purpose of advocating for the agency
  • Familiarity with establishing government relations strategies is critical and project management experience is highly desired. 

 

Salary Range: $80,149 - $108,200 (Depending on Qualifications)

 

Compensation packages are determined based on a variety of factors specific to each candidate,including geographic location, skillset, the mix of relevant education,certifications,experience level, and performance. At Long Beach Transit, compensation decisions are made considering the unique requirements and circumstances of each position.
