Overview

Under the direction of the Managers, Fleet Maintenance and under the guidance of the Mechanic A of paint and body, the Mechanic B safely performs vehicle body and paint repairs.

Responsibilities

  • Checks vehicles or related equipment for damages and creates a repair plan                                                       
  • Prepares vehicle surfaces for paint application by removing parts, masking areas and sanding                                                                                                     
  • Paints vehicle surfaces through spray application or other means with a variety of paints and related materials                      
  • Repairs dents and scratches through the application of body repair materials, and/or the replacement of body panels and parts
  • Repair’s chassis and related damages through the use of gas, arc welding, Metal Inert Gas, (MIG), Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) and plasma equipment                                       
  • Keeps painting equipment, work area and materials in clean and working order; inventories materials and recommends purchase of needed paint, materials, tools and related equipment
  • Maintains records of work performed, parts used and time worked
  • Replaces broken glass windshields and windows as necessary
  • Fabricates parts and tools as necessary
  • Maintains minimum tool requirement at all times as designated by Long Beach Transit   
  • Complies with all safety and environmental regulations as stated in the company safety program, and reports safety-related accidents, incidents and unsafe work conditions; attends safety-training programs as required
  • Other duties as assigned         

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Good knowledge of advanced techniques and methods of surface preparation and paint application related to vehicle body work.  Materials, tools and equipment used in the preparation and repair of body and chassis damaged vehicles and related equipment. Safe working practices relating to all assigned job duties and ability to assume the responsibility for safe working conditions.  Must possess a valid Class C California driver license with a safe driving record (must be able to obtain a Class B commercial driver license with air brake and passenger endorsements).  Must have all required tools when hired. Must be able to pass a Hybrid and CNG component and safety class, basic Hybrid high voltage familiarization class, dead bus starting procedures.

 

Must be able to pass respiratory testing for utilizing fresh air breathing equipment. Must be able to perform heavy manual labor (must be able to lift a minimum of 55 pounds). Must be able to work different shifts, at any of the two locations (LBT1 and LBT2), including weekends and holidays. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with co-workers and other staff employees.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Three (3) years of experience in the paint and body repair of motor coaches, automobiles, or related equipment. Must be familiar with computer work and be able to read, write and speak English well enough to sufficiently perform all essential functions and duties of a Paint and Body Technician. Welding, paint and body training certificates are desirable. Work experience will be considered in lieu of license and certifications. 

 

SALARY STRUCTURE

Mechanic B - $36.91 per hour
