Overview

OVERVIEW: Long Beach Transit’s (LBT) College Internship Program is a year-round, paid internship program for undergraduate and graduate students. The Intern will gain real-world work experience on meaningful projects under the guidance of transportation professionals. The Intern will have the opportunity to use problem-solving, communication and decision-making skills to gain valuable experience. The Intern will also work with a mentor for assistance, along with working with various departments to enhance a career path.

 

As an emerging professional, the Intern will be exposed to LBT’s career opportunities in the public transportation industry. The Intern will gain a deeper awareness of many facets of transportation through LBT’s orientation sessions, cross-departmental projects and teams, as well as internal networking.

 

GENERAL SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Executive Director/Vice President of Transit Service Delivery & Planning and the guidance of the Manager, Service Planning. The intern role is a developmental position that will be assisting in maintaining transit operations and ridership associated databases, providing field analysis of service issues, and collecting and analyzing operation data to provide effective and efficient performance measurements and transit planning solutions associated with the operation of LBT’s fixed bus route, Dial-a-Lift, and water taxi services

Responsibilities

  • Applies Geographic Information System (GIS) and traffic engineering techniques to develop internal and external reports and data formatting relating to transit operations characteristics 
  • Assists in the preparation of mapping and data summaries of transit operations performance improvement measures using Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) and other related data sources such as General Transit Feed Specification (GTFS), fare collection, and automated passenger counting (APC) systems. 
  • Applies statistical methods and relational database programs analysis related to service planning activities. 
  • Conducts technical research (both in the field and in office) as required and performs other related departmental work, including assistance identifying, developing, and maintaining organization of projects, reports, presentations, videos, and other administrative assistance as may be required. 
  • Identifies and documents transportation problems and needs with recommendations and assessments of transit services and prepares findings. 

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

A full-time student majoring or minoring in Urban Planning/Studies, City & Regional Planning, Engineering, Geography, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Public Administration, Computer Science, Finance, or a related field; must be detail oriented and experienced in quantitative data analysis; possess strong communication and organizational skills, be proficient in Microsoft Excel, PowerBI, Access, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and ArcGIS. Familiarity with Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Tableau, Python, and R is preferred but not required. 

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE 

Successful candidate will be a full-time student majoring in Urban Planning/Studies, Engineering, Geography, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Public Administration, Computer Science, Finance, or a related field and maintain a 2.7 or better GPA for undergraduate students, and a 3.0 or better GPA for graduate students. Candidate must be detail oriented and experienced in quantitative data analysis.

NORMAL HIRING RANGE: $17.00 to $20.00/hour depending on education level. Part-time internship available to full-time college students; approximately 20 hours per week not to exceed up to 1,000 hours within a fiscal year. This position does not offer benefits. Participation in the internship program is not an offer of regular full-time or part-time employment with LBT, and it does not guarantee future employment with LBT.
