  • Overview

    The Bus Operator/ Bus Driver is responsible for the efficient and safe operation of various types of transit buses and on-board equipment in varying traffic conditions; for collecting fares and ensuring that all passengers are transported over specific routes in a safe, timely and courteous manner.


    • Performs a complete pre-trip inspection of bus, safety checks equipment, and informs dispatch when adjustments or repairs are necessary, in accordance with Department of Motor Vehicle regulations
    • Provide excellent customer service to passengers utilizing positive customer relations; assist passengers in and out of bus when requested and communicate effectively with passengers
    • Operates bus on specified route and making required stops with due regard to safety and comfort of passengers
    • Provides directions and information to the public concerning routes, schedules, and fare
    • Operates wheelchair lift and assists disabled passengers in boarding, securing, riding, and alighting in a safe manner
    • Responsible for complying with written and posted traffic regulations
    • Writes reports and completes forms as required, may prepare detailed written reports concerning accidents, incidents, breakdowns, and mechanical defects
    • Reports hazardous or dangerous conditions along bus routes and at bus stop zones, including such hazards as unusual traffic, road conditions, obstructions, construction, and criminal activity
    • Adheres to safety rules, regulations, policies, and procedures to ensure the well-being of Long Beach Transit customers and employees
    • Other duties as assigned


    • Must be 21 years or older with a California Driver’s License (at least two years with CA driver’s license)
    • High school diploma or equivalent preferred, but not required
    • Excellent driving record
    • Ability to upgrade to Class B driver’s license with a passenger endorsement and air breaks certification, with no restrictions of the weight of the vehicle
    • Availability to work varying shifts, hours, days, and locations



    • Must be able to read, write and speak English well enough to sufficiently perform all essential functions and duties of the Bus Operator

    • At least one year of experience involving public contact
    • 2-3 years of customer service experience

    Valid CA Class C license required with excellent driving record

    • Starting rate after training $16.35 per hour with annual raises with a top pay rate of $29.73 per hour
