    Long Beach Transit’s (LBT) Student Intern Professional is a year-round paid program.  The Intern will gain real world work experience on meaningful projects under the guidance of transportation professionals.  The Intern will have the opportunity to use problem solving, communication and decision-making skills to gain valuable experience.  The Intern will also work with a mentor for assistance along with working with various departments to enhance a career path. 


    As a professional, the Intern will be exposed to LBT’s career opportunities in the transportation industry.  The Intern will gain deeper awareness of many facets of transportation through LBT’s orientation, cross-divisional projects and teams and internal networking.


    Normal Hiring Range:  $15.00 to $17.00/hour depending on education level.  Part-time employment approximately 20 hours per week not to exceed 1,000 hours within a continuous 12-month period.  This position does not offer benefits. 


    General Summary:  Under the direction of the Manager of Facilities and Infrastructure, the intern role is a developmental position that will involve key aspects of facilities related engineering.  This will include design / drafting duties as well as electrical and solar panel design support, updating as-built's and drawing files, on-site construction inspections, HVAC engineering, preliminary design reviews, management of AutoCAD files and operating computerized maintenance management software (CMMS). 




    • Assist Facility Engineer in planning or implementing facility projects, building modifications, and equipment relocations
    • Assist Facility Engineer in technical tasks including creation, update and maintaining of CAD drawing files, spreadsheets or computerized databases in support of facility projects
    • Analyze facility utility consumption & cost data for electricity, natural gas and water in support of energy management goals
    • Work with Facility Supervisors in order to provide familiarity with equipment, related systems and processes.  Will administratively support the migration to new facilities management software with equipment management, preventive maintenance and weekly reporting / analysis


    Successful candidate will be a full time student maintaining a 2.7 or above GPA for undergrads and a 3.0 for graduate students and currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree Program majoring in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, or Engineering Technology Civil Engineering or Construction Engineering or a related field. Transcripts and class schedules will be requested. Must be capable of working with others in a project team setting.  Knowledge of AutoCAD 2009 or higher. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Capability to work independently with minimal supervision and manage competing deadlines.
