    Long Beach Transit's (LBT) Student Intern Program offers career-minded students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience while being compensated. Intern will gain real-world work experience on meaningful projects under the guidance of professionals, and will have the opportunity to use problem-solving, communication and decision-making skills. The Intern will also work with a professional(s) as a Mentor for assistance to enhance a career path.


    The Intern will be exposed to LBT's career opportunities in the transportation industry. The Intern will gain deeper awareness of many facets of Transportation through LBT's orientation, cross-divisional projects and internal networking.


    NORMAL HIRING RANGE:  $15.00 to $17.00/hour depending on education level. Part-time internship available to full-time college students, approximately 20 hours per week not to exceed up to 1,000 hours within a fiscal year. This position does not offer benefits. Participation in the Internship is not an offer of regular full time or part-time employment with LBT and it does not guarantee future employment with LBT. 



    This position reports directly to the Manager of External Affairs and work closely with the Executive Leadership Team on projects of originating from, or with implications for, stakeholders external to the agency. The purpose of this position is to assist in representing the interests of LBT while building mutually beneficial and collaborative relationships with public officials, regional stakeholders and community partners on transit-related issues, projects, policies, initiatives, funding and issues.




    • Assist is liaison efforts with elected officials, city departments, and civic/community stakeholders
    • Assist in facilitating LBT special projects and collaborate with external entities and civic leaders accordingly
    • Track and helps coordinate event participation and external engagements
    • Assists in the development of outreach materials and presentations
    • Attends meetings with civic and community partners on relevant issues affecting LBT and regional mobility
    • Assists with research, preparation and execution of media events and press conferences
    • Other duties as required



    Successful candidate will be a full time student maintaining a 2.7 GPA or above for undergraduate students and a 3.0 GPA for graduate students and currently enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's degree program majoring in Political Science, Public Administration, Urban/City Planning, Communications or related field. Candidate must be detail oriented: possess strong communication and presentation skills; able to work independently or with diverse groups; able to organize tasks, manage time, and prioritize projects. Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications required; familiarity with Photoshop and InDesign desirable.
