Maintenance - Mechanic


Long Beach Transit maintains a fleet of buses, which includes 60-ft. articulated buses, gasoline hybrids, Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), Diesel, and battery propulsions systems.  This position performs all types of bus vehicle repairs, inspections, maintenance and electrical repairs, ranging from minor to major.   Mechanics that are hired will be placed in “A,” “B,” or “C” classification based on experience and aptitude.  “C” and “B” mechanics, under supervision and training, have opportunity for advancement to “A” mechanic.

  • Able to demonstrate safe working practices.
  • Troubleshoot, service and repair; diesel, CNG, gasoline hybrid, and battery powered propulsion systems.
  • Works with all tools of the trade, including bus computer based diagnostic software programs.
  • Performs all preventative maintenance inspections.
  • Inspects and maintains air systems and air brake components.
  • Performs detailed electrical repairs and diagnoses component failures.
  • Performs suspension repairs and maintenance.
  • Performs diagnosis and repairs for heating, ventilations and air conditioning systems.
  • Ability to work independently performing over the road repairs.
  • Performs engine and transmission diagnosis and repairs.
  • Assists other mechanics as needed.
  • Ability to learn new technologies.


Must be 21 years or older and have a minimum of two years, hands-on vehicle mechanic experience, equivalent training and education/coursework in this field may be considered. Bus electrical systems,  heavy equipment, and alternative fuel experience are desirable.  Must have own personal tools and meet the company’s tool requirements.  Intermediate knowledge with computer diagnostics and computer skills are highly desirable.  Must possess a valid California license for a minimum of two years, with the ability to upgrade to a California B license, and have an excellent safe driving record.  Applicants must be able to read, write, speak and understand English. Must be willing to work any of the three shifts available.




Mechanic C - $24.46 per hour

Mechanic B - $28.74 per hour

Mechanic A - $30.57 per hour


Based on experience, with excellent company paid fringe benefits. A member of the Amalgamated Transit Union, Local 1277.
